These were the top five biggest-selling models of new cars in Ireland in 2016

New car sales reached their highest level in eight years in 2016, having gone up by a whopping 17.4% in the last 12 months.

According to figures released by motorcheck.ie, 146,385 new cars were sold in 2016, with the increase of 17.4% last year following on from two consecutive years of 30% annual growth levels, putting the total sales figures for new cars back to what they were in 2008, just before the recession hit.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Ford and Nissan were the top selling makes of new car in 2016, while the top selling models were the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia and Nissan Qashqai.

Used cars imported into Ireland during 2016, meanwhile, reached the highest levels seen in 10 years, with 72,587 used imports registered during the year, a 50% increase on 2015.

Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, Audi and Vauxhall proved to be the most popular imports, while the most popular models were the Ford Focus, VW Golf, VW Passat, Audi A4 and Vauxhall Insignia.
