12 brand new TV shows that you’ll be addicted to in 2017

Paul Moore

It’s shaping up to be a very good year for TV.

2016 was filled plenty of memorable TV shows, you can see some of our favourites here, but what’s in store over the coming 12 months?

In terms of returning shows, we have all of the following to look forward to; Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, Narcos, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, Fargo, Homeland, House of Cards, Master of None, The Americans and the return of old favourites like Prison Break and Curb Your Enthusiasm, to name just a few.

Still though, what about some of the new shows that might just become your new favourites? Here are the ones that sound the most promising to us.

(FYI, we omitted documentaries from this list)

The Deuce

Plot: A look at life in New York City during the 1970s and ’80s when porn and prostitution were rampant in Manhattan.  Themes explored include the rise of HIV, the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts that coincided with these changes in US society.

Watch it because: The HBO show is created by David Simon, the man who’s responsible for The Wire, Show Me A Hero and Treme. Enough said.

El Chapo

Plot: A drama that’s based on the life of Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman who became infamous around the world following his high-profile prison escape (again), interview with Sean Penn and subsequent recapture last year.  Oh yeah, he’s also frequently on the Forbes billionaires list as one of the richest and most powerful men in the world, and is responsible for bringing in a quarter of all drugs into the US.

Watch it because: It’s an original Netlfix drama and Narcos fans will be eagerly anticipating this one. Can Netflix strike gold again?

Legion

Plot: David Haller is a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, he has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions might be real.

Watch it because: It’s the first official X-Men spin-off on TV and its showrunner, Noah Hawley, is the man that created Fargo. This could be excellent.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

Plot: Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance.

Watch it because: Daniel Handler’s series of books are the closest thing that you’ll get to Roald Dahl’s unique mix of danger, darkness and daring. The trailer has left us feeling very optimistic.

The Marvel Slate

Plot: Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher are all coming to Netflix in 2017, the first time that the streaming giant will have three new Marvel shows in a single year. If you had to push us on just one, we would opt for The Punisher because Jon Bernthal’s performance as the tough, brutal and wounded Frank Castle was superb in the second season of Daredevil.

Watch it because: Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have all been critically acclaimed, we expect the same as Hell’s Kitchen starts to heat up. Marvel have excelled in their TV content so far,  they’re not going to drop the ball.

Big Little Lies

Plot: The series tells the story of three mothers as their seemingly perfect lives  begin to unravel.

Watch it because: The cast is extremely strong with Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgård and Adam Scott all featuring.

Taken

Plot: As former CIA agent Bryan Mills deals with a personal tragedy that shakes his world, he fights to overcome the incident and exact revenge.

Watch it because: If it can capture some of lunacy that made the Liam Neeson original so much fun, we could be onto a winner.

The Santa Clarita Diet

Plot: Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter Abby (Liv Hewson), until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.

Watch it because: Gore, gore and more gore. Also, the first two of episodes of the 10 episode series were directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer. Win!

American Gods

Plot: A recently released ex-convict named Shadow meets a mysterious man who calls himself “Wednesday” and who knows more than he first seems to about Shadow’s life and past.

Watch it because: Neil Gaiman’s tale of Norse gods living among everyday Americans is one of his best pieces of fiction. Showrunner Bryan Fuller has an impressive resume having worked on the likes of Pushing Daisies, Hannibal , Heroes and Dead Like Me.

Star Trek: Discovery

Plot: According to reports, the first season will unfold over 13 episodes, telling one complete story over the course of the season instead of a new, self-contained story each episode. The teaser has promised “new crews,” “new villains,” “new heroes,” and “new worlds”.

Watch it because: JJ Abrams’ films have helped to make Star Trek popular with younger audiences but the TV show is boldly going where no Star Trek has gone before, it’s set ten years before the start of the original series.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Plot: Set in a dystopian future, a woman is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship.

Watch it because: The adaptaion of Margaret Atwood’s book is eerily close to the times in which we live in. The plot revolves around a theocratic military dictatorship in which women’s rights have been abolished.

Twin Peaks

Plot: It’s a continuation of the original series and aside from the returning cast members, the 18 episode series will reportedly feature Trent Reznor, Sky Ferreira, Eddie Vedder, and other musicians.

Watch it because: David Lynch is back. This is bound to be as mystifying, gripping and utterly odd as the original.
