Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 11 November) is 1917, the three-time Oscar-winning war film from co-writer and director Sam Mendes (Skyfall).
Set during World War I, the movie follows two young British soldiers, Will and Tom (played by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman), who are tasked with a seemingly impossible mission.
The pair must cross over into enemy territory to deliver an important message to call off a doomed offensive attack.
If the two are successful, they could potentially save 1,600 of their comrades, as well as Tom's own brother.
Inspired by real-life tales told to Mendes by his grandfather, Alfred Mendes, who served in WWI, 1917's ensemble cast also includes Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong and Richard Madden.
Upon its release in 2019, the movie was highly praised by critics, specifically for its one-shot-style cinematography and its hard-hitting depiction of trench warfare.
Nominated for 10 Oscars, the war drama wound up winning three: Best Cinematography (the film was shot by the legendary Roger Deakins), as well as Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects.
Holding an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, 1917 is airing on TV tonight on BBC Four at 10pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play and the Sky Store.
Midnight Run - Comedy Central - 9pm
In this brilliant crime comedy, Robert De Niro plays a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter tasked with tracking down and turning in an accountant (a hilarious Charles Grodin), who is wanted by mob bosses and the FBI.
As the pair grow closer on their travels, the bounty hunter struggles to complete the job, as this will put the accountant in danger.
Terminator Genisys - Film4 - 9pm
One of the weaker Terminator movies.
Marked for Death - Legend - 9pm
A 1990 Steven Seagal action flick.
No Mercy - Legend Xtra - 9pm
Richard Gere is a cop out for vengeance in this ’80s neo-noir, which also stars Kim Basinger.
White House Down - Virgin Media Two - 10pm
This might be a hot take, but we enjoy this Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx action flick better than the similarly plotted Olympus Has Fallen.
Unhinged - Sky Max - 10pm
Russell Crowe plays a motorist with a serious case of road rage in this silly but watchable thriller.
Righteous Kill - Legend - 10.55pm
After The Godfather Part II and Heat, screen legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro reteamed for this action thriller in 2008. Sadly, it was quite poor.
Bohemian Rhapsody - Film4 - 11.25pm
Rami Malek won the Best Actor for his turn as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in this music biopic.
Lucy in the Sky - Channel 4 - 1.55am
From the creator of the Alien: Earth and Fargo TV shows, this psychological drama about an astronaut (Oscar-winner Natalie Portman) who struggles with life on Earth after returning from a space mission is quite underrated, in our opinion.
