Here are the 21 best movies on the TV this weekend

Rory Cashin

This might be the best weekend for movies on the telly of the year so far.

After we were all kind of forced to remain indoors last weekend (cheers Emma!), perhaps the thoughts of doing so again this weekend sets off some kind of preemptive cabin fever reaction.

If that is the case, you can check out this week’s episode of The Big Reviewski, where we chat about all of the new cinema releases:

However, should you decide to be sitting in at any point over the weekend, and not sure which movies are worth a watch, you have A LOT to choose from on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

FRIDAY

The Hunger Games – Film 4 – 18:15

This is pretty much where the world was introduced to Jennifer Lawrence, as she helped ground one of the better Young Adult adaptations around.

Red Eye – TV3 – 21:00

Rachel McAdams finds herself sitting next to a very charming Cillian Murphy on a flight, but she soon discovers that he has placed himself beside her for a very specific and deeply terrifying reason.

I Love You, Man – Comedy Central – 23:00

Paul Rudd doesn’t really have any friends (SCIENCE FICTION!), and with his wedding coming up, he goes on the hunt for a new BFF so he can have a best man. Before long he crosses paths with Jason Segel, and hilarity ensues.

Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgandy – 3E – 23.05

“Go fuck yourself, San Diego.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier – BBC One – 00.05

We still reckon this is the best Marvel movie to date, as Captain America finds himself in the middle of a very shadow-y political thriller… one that just happens to feature giant automated gun-ships.

SATURDAY

45 Years – Channel 4 – 21:00

Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtneay are a happily married couple for the titular amount of time, but on the eve of their anniversary, she discovers that the love of her life very nearly ended up with someone else, which brings up decades of questions about their relationship.

Salt – E4 – 21:00

Angelina Jolie is the double (or is it triple?) agent who has placed herself in the midst of American government for years (or has she?), waiting to be activated by her Russian handler (or not?). Forced to go on the run to clear her name (or complete her goal), this is a pretty breathless action thriller.

Death Of A Superhero – RTE Two – 21:30

An adorable Irish drama which sees a young boy with a fatal disease attempting to deal with his own impending death, and using his own cartoon drawings, as well as his death therapist (Andy Serkis), to try to cope. Prepare for tears.

Pineapple Express – Comedy Central – 22:30

Seth Rogen and James Franco are two kinda-friends, one uses the other for sourcing drugs, but they accidentally find themselves embroiled in a massive gang war between drug lords and crooked cops.

Dial M For Murder – BBC Two – 23:15

One of Hitchcock’s best thrillers, featuring an effortlessly amazing Grace Kelly who survives a murder attempt in her own home, one she doesn’t realise has been orchestrated by her own husband.

This Is The End – ITV4 – 23:20

The apocalypse is here, and all of Hollywood’s biggest names have been left behind in a house-party gone terribly, terribly wrong. One of those comedies that looked like it was just as much fun to make as it is to watch.

Die Hard – RTE One – 00:25

“Yippee-kay-yay, mutherfucker!”

Her – Film 4 – 00:45

Spike Jonze’s brilliant rom-dram, which sees Joaquin Phoenix fall in love with the AI on his phone. Taking the idea that technology is making us all lonelier to the maximum degree, this is a heartbreaking, brilliant movie. Definitely one of the best films of the last decade.

SUNDAY

Deep Impact – BBC Two – 18:10

The asteroid movie that ISN’T Armageddon, this is the more think-y one, as President Morgan Freeman tries to get as many people into an underground bunker as possible. Also features that giant tsunami scene that is still pretty impressive to this day.

I, Robot – E4 – 18:55

Will Smith is attempting to solve a murder, where the suspect is a robot, except that all robots are built with a programme that prevents them from committing murder. Fun, stylish, and Smith is clearly having a blast.

Gravity – ITV2 – 19:10

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play the two survivors of a massive accident in space that leaves them with no way of getting back to Earth. A technological marvel, one to watch on the biggest screen and loudest speakers you can get your eyes and ears on.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me – Comedy Central – 21:00

The superior sequel, with Heather Graham as Felicity Shagwell, and Powers sent back to the sixties to stop a time-travel plot by Dr. Evil and his new micro-doppelganger, Mini Me.

The World’s End – E4 – 22:00

The final entry in the Cornetto Trilogy sees Simon Pegg and Nick Frost joined by Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman and Eddie Marsan attempt to complete an age-old pub-crawl in their hometown, but something is very different about their sleepy village…

Falling Down – ITV4 – 23:45

Michael Douglas plays a man finally pushed to his limits in Los Angeles, and decides to push back.. with a machine gun… and a bazooka. To be fair, we totally understand what he means about the pictures of hamburgers.

Fright Night – BBC One – 23:35

The late, great Anton Yelchin and his movie-mom Toni Colette live in Las Vegas, and one day they cross paths with a very charismatic new neighbour, played by Colin Farrell, who … well, how do we put this? He’s a vampire. Colin Farrell is a Las Vegas vampire. And he still gets out-camped by David Tennant as a Russell Brand-esque Vegas performer.

American Hustle – Film 4 – 01:00

Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, Louis CK, Michael Pena and more star in this 1970s based-on-a-true-story tale of loan sharks, corrupt FBI agents and fantastically big hair.
