Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 7 March) is Aisha, the acclaimed 2022 Irish drama from writer-director Frank Berry (Michael Inside).
The film focuses on the title character (Letitia Wright, Black Panther), a young Nigerian woman seeking asylum in Ireland who is "floundering in a maze of social services and bureaucracy".
"Alone and unwilling to sacrifice her dignity to satisfy the demands of the authorities, she finds an ally in Conor (Josh O’Connor, Challengers), an employee at her residence home, a local young man with a troubled past of his own," the plot synopsis reads.
"Together they struggle to maintain their tender friendship in the face of Aisha’s increasingly dire predicament and her rapidly diminishing options."
The drama earned rave reviews from critics upon release, with many praising its timely story and powerful performances.
Holding a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, the film also picked up three Irish Film Awards - including Best Director and Best Script for Berry.
Aisha is airing on BBC Two at 11.05pm. It is also available to watch via NOW Cinema and Sky Cinema.
