The horror film has an incredibly cool premise.

Prime Video has added the excellent Irish horror movie All You Need is Death to its service, just weeks after the film’s cinema release.

Written and directed by Paul Duane (Secret Diary of a Call Girl), the horror centres around Anna (Simone Collins) and Aleks (Charlie Maher) – a couple who are a part of a secret organisation which believes that magic power is contained in old, forgotten songs.

As such, they travel around Ireland seeking out trad tunes – the lesser heard and known the better.

The pair find themselves directed to Rita Concannon (the always hypnotic Olwen Fouéré, The Watched) – the last in a line of women to have handed a song forbidden to men down through generations, one that has never been recorded.

When Anna and Aleks make a secret recording of the tune, however, they open the door to an ancient evil and madness.

Featuring a striking and disquieting soundtrack from Ian Lynch of Lankum fame, All You Need is Death sees Duane putting a uniquely Irish and musical spin on folk horror, resulting in one of the best entries in the sub-genre we’ve seen in a long time.

While the movie’s distinct tone and off-kilter story may turn away some more casual viewers, those seeking out something inventive and different should definitely add the film to their watchlist.

Holding an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can read a sample of some of the glowing reviews All You Need is Death earned right here:

Bloody Disgusting: “All You Need is Death is an expertly executed, tragic love story and a beautifully written ode to ancient Irish folklore.”

The Daily Beast: “Knowing just how much to say aloud and how much to suggest through visual and aural means, this superb Irish fable feels at once modern and ancient, and hums with mystery and malice.”

Nightmare on Film Street: “All You Need Is Death is a true folk horror, with vibe-heavy atmospheric storytelling that relies on sound design as much as it relies on speech to convey it’s meaning.”

Original Cin: “Billed as a horror film, All You Need is Death is in no hurry to play into the genre’s traditional tropes. Duane instead takes a steady and unnerving path. This is a film to be discovered, made by a director worth discovering.”

Paste Magazine: “Ireland is a lush green country with at least one haunted house story for every village and hamlet, an ongoing contrast between timeless beauty and eldritch terror. Paul Duane puts that dynamic at the centre of All You Need Is Death.”

All You Need is Death is streaming on Prime Video in Ireland right now.
