Tapping into real world fears, the film earned solid reviews upon its 2022 release.
Netflix has just added to its service Baby Ruby, a 2022 psychological horror thriller movie starring Noémie Merlant (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Tár) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones, Industry).
The film revolves around Jo (Merlant), a successful lifestyle entrepreneur who is happily pregnant and eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first child.
However, soon after Jo welcomes baby Ruby home, something starts to feel off, even though she’s assured by various people – including her husband (Harrington) – that everything is fine.
“Is something wrong with her? Is something wrong with Ruby? And why are the seemingly perfect neighbourhood moms so desperate to befriend her? As Jo fights to protect herself and her baby, she is plunged into a waking fever dream where everyone is a threat and nothing is what it seems,” the plot synopsis reads.
The directing debut of playwright Bess Wohl, who wrote the movie as well, Baby Ruby also stars Meredith Hagner (Bad Monkey) and earned mostly positive reviews from critics.
In particular, the slow burn horror thriller garnered praise for Merlant’s gripping central performance, the unsettling mood Wohl creates and the way the film uses genre storytelling to explore the postpartum experience.
