Movies on TV

There are some very good picks tonight.

Ireland lost to New Zealand. Brexit is still Brexiting.

Let’s drown our misery with a film. On that note, here’s the best of what’s on TV tonight.

Hellboy – 18:30 on SyFy

One of the great comic book films that didn’t get the love at the box-office. A real shame because Del Toro’s gothic-actioner still looks great.

102 Dalmatians – 18:35 on RTÉ1

There’s an extra dog.

10 Things I Hate About You – 21:00 on Comedy Central

Extremely good reimagining of The Taming of the Shrew that features Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik.

Get Out – Channel 4 at 21:00

A fine example of why it’s never a good idea to introduce your partner to your parents. Jordan Peele’s satire/horror is excellent.

Taken – 21:00 on E4

Liam Neeson has family issues.

Spy – 21:00 on Film4

One of Melissa McCarthy’s best films as she’s paired with The Stath.

The Hangover – 21:00 on ITV2

Alan : Gambling? Who said anything about gambling? It’s not gambling when you know you’re gonna win. Counting cards is a foolproof system.

Stu : It’s also illegal.

Alan : It’s not illegal. It’s frowned upon, like masturbating on an airplane.

Phil : I’m pretty sure that’s illegal too.

Alan : Yeah, maybe after 9/11, where everybody got so sensitive. Thanks a lot, bin Laden.

Genius.

Split – 22:00 on RTÉ2

An absolute tour-de-force from James McAvoy. We always wondered if he picked up more than one paycheque though?

Watchmen – 22:00 on Sky 1

Ahead of the new HBO show airing next week, it’s time to catch up with Rorschach and co.

Sudden Death – 22:10 on ITV4

Van Damme stars in Die Hard at a hockey rink. It’s as good as it sounds.

Kinky Boots – 22:30 on BBC2

A drag queen comes to the rescue of a man who, after inheriting his father’s shoe factory, needs to diversify his product if he wants to keep the business afloat.

Great film, great cast, great play.

Snatch – 23:00 on Comedy Central

Ever hear about the Father Ted character that Brad Pitt based his accent on in Guy Ritchie’s film?

Fences – 23:05 on Channel 4

Viola Davis and Denzel Washington are excellent in this slow-burning drama.

Byzantium – 23:20 on Film4

Residents of a coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort. Decent vampire flick with Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton.

Starsky and Hutch – oo:25 on ITV4

Do it! Do it!

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
