Prime Video has just added Barber, one of JOE's favourite Irish crime thriller movies of recent years.
"As initial investigations into her disappearance begin to darken, secrets surface in unexpected ways," the plot synopsis adds.
"Before too long, Barber finds himself entangled with powerful men of shady morals determined to thwart his investigations. Has he bitten off more than he can chew?"
Barber re-teamed Gillen and co-writer/director Fintan Connolly. This was after they collaborated on the 2005 film Trouble with Sex.
Barber is a very cool movie. It takes the archetypes of the noir mystery - complete with a sardonic, sympathetic detective becoming caught in a far-reaching conspiracy - but places them in a recognisable, modern-day Dublin.
Also, through Barber's backstory and investigation, the movie becomes a fascinating exploration of an ever-changing Ireland.
Gillen is brilliant in the lead role. In fact, we wish we could watch a case-of-the-week series focusing on Val Barber's exploits.
Holding an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can read some other glowing reviews for the film here:

Barber is streaming on Prime Video in Ireland, the UK and the US right now.

| Cinemalogue | "Although it treads familiar narrative territory, this gritty and evocative Irish thriller benefits from a solid performance by Aiden Gillen in the title role." |
| Film Ireland Magazine | "Featuring some of the best homegrown actors our indigenous industry has to offer, Barber tackles timely themes while delivering a fresh take on a classic form." |
| MovieJawn | "Connolly’s film works more as a shrewd character study than a tough, cynical thriller, though it is, indeed, both." |
| Radio Times | "A playful and referential hark back to film noir of old, starring Aidan Gillen as a careworn gumshoe in modern-day Dublin." |
| RogerEbert.com | "Barber takes place during the initial months of COVID lockdown (incidentally, when it was filmed). Social distancing is on everyone’s minds, and frequent Zoom calls are a novelty. The Dublin in Barber, indeed the Ireland in Barber, is torn between the past and the present. There’s a lot of tension along old fault lines." |
