Disney has confirmed that the long-gestating reboot of The X-Files from Oscar-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Sinners) will be getting a season of television.
Now, the project has been picked up as a series. A new plot synopsis reads: "A reimagining of the classic, the series follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena."
In a press release confirming the news, Coogler states: “I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me."
Praising The X-Files creator Chris Carter, he added: "We wanted to honour everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.
"Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience."
Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and will serve as executive producer on the series along with Deadwyler, Patel, and showrunner Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test, Your Friends and Neighbours).
Carter will also executive produce the reboot, while Coogler's frequent collaborator Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther) contributed to the pilot's score.
Previously reported guest stars for this new version of The X-Files include Oscar-winner Amy Madigan (Weapons), as well as Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs), and Steve Buscemi (Fargo).
This news comes after an R-rated "scarier" director's cut of the movie The X-Files: I Want to Believe was released on Disney+ last August. Read more about that right here.
