Borderline, a fun new comedy thriller movie with a lot of great talent involved, is now available to stream.
Executive produced by Margot Robbie (Barbie, Saltburn), the film is the directorial debut of Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden and can be watched at home through the service NOW.
The story is set in the '90s and follows Paul (Ray Nicholson, Novocaine), a dangerously obsessed fan of pop star Sofia (Samara Weaving, Ready or Not).
Aided by some friends (one of whom is played by Alba Baptista, Warrior Nun), Paul invades the singer's LA mansion with grand delusions of a wedding.
With her life on the line but with help from her loyal bodyguard (Eric Dane, Euphoria), the pop star must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot.
Also starring Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco) as a famous basketballer and Sofia's boyfriend, Borderline is an always compelling mix of a quirky comedy and a dark home invasion thriller, that also manages in some moments to be oddly affecting and have genuine pathos.
That said, sometimes these disparate tones do jar together. Perhaps the script needed another pass to smooth out some of these discordant notes, and to also bulk up the character of Sofia, who feels a tad underdeveloped.
Even with these flaws, a brilliant central performance by Ray Nicholson keeps viewers glued to the screen. This is as the actor deploys his iconic Cheshire cat grin to play the deluded home invader, Paul, who genuinely believes he and Sofia are soulmates.
Nicholson is ably supported by the scene-stealing Alba Baptista as one of his accomplices, whose smiley and polite outward appearance belies her psychopathic nature.
Eric Dane is also excellent in a supporting role as Sofia's world-weary protector.
Borderline is currently available to stream in Ireland and the UK through the service NOW.
