Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 25 September) is Carlito's Way, the brilliant 1993 crime thriller from director Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables) and Oscar-winning star Al Pacino (The Godfather trilogy).
Based upon novels by Edwin Torres, the film follows Carlito Brigante (Pacino), a career criminal who is released after years in prison into '70s New York and vows to go straight.
Hoping to rekindle his romance with his dancer ex-girlfriend, Gail (Penelope Ann Miller, The Relic) and retire to the Caribbean, Carlito nevertheless finds himself sucked back into the NYC underworld.
This is thanks to the shady dealings of his lawyer and old friend, Dave (Oscar-winner Sean Penn, Mystic River).
While only lukewarmly received from audiences and critics upon release, Carlito's Way's reputation has vastly improved over time.
In particular, De Palma's stylish direction, Pacino's soulful lead performance, the movie's heartbreaking story and its train station-set climax have been singled out for praise.
The film also boasts a great supporting cast full of future stars, including John Leguizamo (Romeo + Juliet), John Ortiz (Miami Vice), Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights) and Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings).
Carlito's Way is airing on Film4 tonight at 11.20pm. It's also available to rent on Amazon, Apple TV and Google Play.
