It is the streamer’s follow-up to the reported second-most-expensive show of all time.

Prime Video’s blockbuster spy action series Citadel wrapped up its first season just last week but the streamer has already unveiled a teaser trailer for the first spin-off in the soon-to-be TV franchise.

Citadel takes its name from a fictional independent global spy agency in the world of the show that was once tasked with upholding the safety and security of all people. However, eight years before the series’ first season, the spy agency was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows.

“With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts,” the plot synopsis for the first batch of episodes reads.

“However, one night, Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.”

Comprising of six episodes and executive produced by Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame), The Hollywood Reporter states that Citadel’s first season cost around $300 million to make – which would mean it is the second most expensive show of all time behind another Prime Video series – Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

And the streamer clearly has high hopes for the future of Citadel, already renewing the show for the second season, as well as planning a number of spin-off series revolving around different countries. A teaser for the first of these spin-offs in the “spy-verse”, Citadel: Diana, was included in the credits of Citadel’s season one finale and has now been released online.

Citadel: Diana was locally created, produced and filmed in Italy, with production on the series wrapping earlier this year. It will star Matilda De Angelis, best known to English-language audiences for her role in the hit HBO mystery show The Undoing.

While plot details for the Italian spin-off are currently being kept under wraps, Prime Video says that the events of Citadel’s season one finale will create “ripple effects that will be felt throughout the Spyverse”.

Also produced by the Russo Brothers, Citadel: Diana will premiere on the streamer in 2024. Meanwhile, Chopra Jonas and Madden will be back for season two of Citadel, which will begin production this year.
