Constantine star reveals they have not been asked back for sequel

They played arguably the best character in the entire movie.

It has been known for some time now that Keanu Reeves will officially be back for the upcoming Constantine sequel. The only other confirmed names to be returning so far are the original movie’s director Francis Lawrence, who is currently putting his finishing touches to the Hunger Games prequel due in cinemas this November, and the original movie’s producer Akiva Goldsman, who is also currently hard at work on the I Am Legend sequel.

Beyond that very little is known, especially if any of the surviving cast from that first movie – Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Peter Stormare, Tilda Swinton – will be back. And another cast member, who played arguably the coolest character in Constantine, is Djimon Hounsou.

We chatted to the two-time Oscar-nominated actor for his role in new DC blockbuster sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods, in which Hounsou plays the power-gifting Wizard. Check out our interview in full right here:

During our chat, we mention that a particular outfit that the Wizard wears in the Shazam sequel is very reminiscent to an outfit that Hounsou also wears in Constantine. Was that on purpose? The actor tells us:

“No, it was not on purpose at all. But now that you say it, you’ve awakened a vivid memory. That was not planned at all, and it is only now that you’ve indicated it that it makes sense. Yeah, I can see that [comparison].”

And since we’re talking comic book sequels, we asked if he has been approached yet about appearing in the Constantine sequel yet? Hounsou replied:

“No, I have not talked to anyone [about it]. And now suddenly… I’ve only heard through the media that Keanu Reeves was looking forward and hoping to re-enact that story.”

Hounsou then ends that bit of the chat by crossing his fingers on both hands, so he is clearly still very hopeful that he will be asked back for the Constantine sequel. And it is still very early days in the pre-production on that sequel, so we might yet be seeing him return as the incredibly cool Midnite.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods arrives in Irish cinemas on Friday, 17 March, and you can check out our interviews with more of the movie’s cast, including Shazam himself Zachary Levi (here), Lucy Liu & Rachel Zegler (here), Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer (here), as well as the movie’s director David F. Sandberg (here).
