Die Alone, a 2024 post-apocalyptic movie, has been made available to stream at home.
Accessible to watch via NOW, the Canadian horror thriller takes place in an Earth devastated by a plant‑based virus that transforms humans into resilient, zombie-like hybrids (a plot point that has earned comparisons to the HBO hit series The Last of Us).
Die Alone, however, follows Ethan (Douglas Smith), a young man with amnesia. This is as he searches for his missing girlfriend, Emma (Kimberly-Sue Murray, The Boys), amidst the increasingly dangerous landscape being reclaimed by nature.
Running into trouble, Ethan is rescued by Mae (Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix franchise), an older hardened survivalist. She takes him to her secluded farm and cares for him.
While staying with Mae, Ethan continues his search for Emma, while also attempting to recover the memory of what happened to him and his missing girlfriend.
Directed by Lowell Dean (WolfCop) and also starring Frank Grillo (Peacemaker), Die Alone has earned an impressive 80% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Critics generally praised the film for its evocation of the end of the world and its deadly creatures, as well as its more emotional and psychological focus, and its twisty plot.
You can read a sample of some of these positive reviews below:
Common Sense Media: "Zombie movies are generally a dime-a-dozen, but this one—which focuses more on ideas than gory kills—offers just enough interesting new angles to make it worth a look for horror hounds."
Flickering Myth: "Not quite a game-changer, but certainly a refreshing detour in a well-trodden landscape, Die Alone is a zombie thriller with a heart – albeit a heart overgrown with creeping vines. Well worth a watch."
The Guardian: "Moss has one of cinema’s great poker faces, an impenetrability enhanced by those spectacularly sculpted cheekbones, so she’s well cast here as an enigma wrapped in a tattered parka."
Loud and Clear Reviews: "Horror-thriller Die Alone successfully breathes new life into survivalist tropes while exploring the effects of nature’s wrath in a creatively horrific way."
Original Cin: "Dean crafts a haunting, romantic thriller. This isn’t just a zombie film; it’s a haunting exploration of love, loss, and what it means to hold on when everything else falls apart."
Die Alone is available to watch in Ireland and the UK on the service NOW.
