Several Oscar-winners are involved in the thriller miniseries both on-screen and off.
A new mystery thriller miniseries available to stream now is being hailed by several critics as “the best show of the year”.
Produced by Apple TV+, the series is titled Disclaimer and stars two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (Tár) as a famous documentarian and journalist whose life is rocked by a new novel that reveals her darkest secrets.
The plot synopsis from the streamer reads:
“Acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realise she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets.
“As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen, Borate) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog).”
Written and directed in its entirety by five-time Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Gravity, Roma), Disclaimer is based on the hit novel of the same name by Renée Knight.
The series also co-stars Oscar-winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda), alongside Hoyeon (Squid Game), Leila George (Animal Kingdom), Lesley Manville (Grotesquerie) and Louis Partridge (Pistol).
On top of this, it boasts cinematography from Oscar-winner Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman, Gravity) and Oscar-nominee Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davis), as well as a score from two-time Oscar winner Finneas O’Connell (Barbie, No Time to Die).
Currently holding an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has earned very positive reviews – with critics singling out its direction, performances, twists, and dark story for praise. Some have even dubbed it 2024’s best series.
You can read a sample of these glowing write-ups right here:
ComingSoon.net: “This show is a spellbinding masterpiece told in seven parts, with a quality of storytelling that will captivate you.”
JoBlo’s Movie Network: “Disclaimer will rank as not only the best series of 2024 but one of the best television series of all time. Disclaimer is a masterpiece of storytelling from one of the best filmmakers working today.”
Observer: “Pulpy, packed with plot, and damn near perfect, this thrilling miniseries demands to be watched.”
The Hollywood Reporter: “Disclaimer is, then, like one of those Penn & Teller magic tricks in which they tell you exactly what they’re doing and, if they spin their meta-yarn enthusiastically enough, you know you’re being manipulated and you’re still amazed.”
Los Angeles Times: “Cuarón is one the century’s most consistently lauded filmmakers, and there is no dearth of filmmaking in Disclaimer, which adjusts stylistically to mirror shifting points of view and actuality.”
USA Today: “The best TV show of the year won’t make you feel good, but it certainly will make you feel deeply. Apple TV+’s Disclaimer is as dark and depressing as any story can be, and it will knock you out with the sheer power of its brilliance… a stunning work of art, a head-spinning odyssey of emotion and tension that will grip you, disgust you, thrill you, and, maybe teach you something about yourself.”
Disclaimer’s first two episodes are streaming on Apple TV+ now, with the rest of the seven-part series dropping weekly on Fridays.
