James Gunn directed the first two films and was set to make Volume 3.

James Gunn, director of both the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has been fired as the director on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 after a series of offensive tweets that he sent were discovered. As reported by Variety, Alan Horn, the studio’s chairman, has said that : “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him." It's understood that the unearthed tweets made light of paedophilia and rape. Gunn's most recent tweets appear to address the recent backlash that he has faced. He has also offered an explanation. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 is scheduled to be released in 2020. https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1020154777525575682 https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1020154779169783808 https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1020154780012834816
