Mark it down. This is going to be special.

Long before Netflix arrived on the circuit and blew everyone way with their unique approach to making and acquiring gripping documentaries, ESPN had cemented their reputation as the definitive home for sports documentaries.

As stated previously in our two-part series, the ’30 for 30′ franchise is superb because it focuses on stories that transcend the sporting field. Look at ‘The Two Escobars ‘ or the ‘Ceasefire Massacre’ about the Loughinisland shootings for proof of this.

Well, in their upcoming feature, they’re going to focus on one of – if not THE – most iconic athlete of the modern era, Michael Jordan.

ESPN Films and Netflix are working together on a 10-part Michael Jordan documentary, The Last Dance, that will premiere in 2019.

As reported by Deadline, the series will focus on Jordan’s time at the Bulls and chart his meteoric rise as a global sporting icon.

Jason Hehir, who directed various ESPN 30 for 30 episodes and the HBO documentary, Andre the Giant, is making all 10 episodes here.

In terms of its narrative and aesthetic approach, the documentary will cipher through over 500 hours of unaired footage from the Chicago Bulls’ championship run in 1997-98. There’s also going to be interviews,  voiceovers and first-hand accounts from dozens of famous athletes.

The first trailer has been released and it’s shaping up to be a cracker. Take a look.
