Netflix’s new sci-fi thriller comes from the people behind Arrival, and it looks like the end of the world as we know it

Rory Cashin

There is nothing better than a great, smart sci-fi movie.

Which is exactly what Arrival was, the amazing Amy Adams-meets-aliens film that had everyone talking about it afterwards.

The screenwriter of that movie is also responsible for the script for Extinction, which looks like it takes bits of some fantastic sci-fi movies like Take Shelter and War Of The Worlds, but in the process, comes up with something all its own.

It involves the story of a father (Ant-Man’s Michael Pena) who has a recurring dream of losing his kids and wife (Cloverfield’s Lizzy Caplan).

His nightmare turns into reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Fighting for their lives, he comes to realise an unknown strength to keep them safe from harm, and team up with the government (fronted by Luke Cage’s Mike Colter) to take down the extraterrestrial menace.

There looks to be a pretty healthy budget pumped into this movie, making for some great action set pieces and intense visuals, alongside the fantastic actors and unique story.

Extinction is set to debut on Netflix on Friday 27 July, and you can check out the trailer right here:
