The creator's previous project scarily predicted the future, in a way that impacted the entire planet.
In an interview with The Washington Post back in October 2020, writer Scott Z. Burns said: "It is sad, and it is frustrating. Sad because so many people are dying and getting sick. Frustrating because people still don’t seem to grasp the situation we are now in and how it could have been avoided by properly funding the science around all of this.
"It is also surreal to me that people from all over the world write to me asking how I knew it would involve a bat or how I knew the term 'social distancing'. I didn’t have a crystal ball - I had access to great expertise. So, if people find the movie to be accurate, it should give them confidence in the public health experts who are out there right now trying to guide us."
At the time, Burns was talking about his script for the movie Contagion, and how it had so eerily predicted what was to happen to the world due to Covid-19, despite the fact that his movie arrived almost a full decade before the pandemic did. So when Burns turns his eye to another terrifying - and very real - danger in what may be our not-too-distant future, we should all sit and pay attention. And probably be terrified.
Extrapolations will look to do for global warming what Contagion did for a global pandemic, with the official plot synopsis as follows: "Eight interwoven stories about love, work, faith and family from across the globe will explore the intimate, life-altering choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population.
"Every story is different, but the fight for our future is universal. And when the fate of humanity is up against a ticking clock, the battle between courage and complacency has never been more urgent. Are we brave enough to become the solution to our own undoing before it’s too late?"
The absolutely jaw-dropping cast includes Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Edward Norton, Diane Lane, Matthew Rhys, Gemma Chan, David Schwimmer, Keri Russell, Marion Cotillard, Forest Whitaker, Eiza González, Murray Bartlett, Tobey Maguire, Heather Graham, Michael Gandolfini, Cherry Jones and Judd Hirsch, to name but a few!
The first episode of Extrapolations arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday, 17 March.
