The plot of Facing El Chapo

The film follows two police officers, Carmona and Rosales, who pull over a stolen car during what appears to be an ordinary traffic stop.

The situation escalates rapidly when they unexpectedly come face to face with Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the powerful and notorious cartel leader, and what began as routine police work becomes a fight for survival. That premise, drawn from real events, is what gives the film its edge.

Behind the camera, Facing El Chapo is directed by Chava Cartas, who previously made Our Times, and written by Bernardo Esquinca, the author behind Pray for Blood.

The screenplay is based on the chronicle by Hector de Mauleon, while Francisco Gonzalez Compean and Sebastian Jurado produce for Draco Films. It is a distinctly Mexican production, telling a Mexican story, and part of Netflix's continued investment in local-language crime cinema.

Who is in the cast?

Alfonso Herrera and Noe Hernandez play the lead roles of Carmona and Rosales. Herrera will be a familiar face to Netflix subscribers for his turn as Javi Elizonndro in Ozark, as well as roles in Sense8 and both Rebel Moon films, where he played Cassius.

He has also appeared in Queen of the South and Prime Video's The House of the Spirits, giving him plenty of pedigree in the crime and thriller space. Hernandez, meanwhile, has featured in several Netflix titles of his own, including the streamer's flagship cartel saga Narcos.

With its true-story hook, a recognisable cast and a subject Netflix audiences keep coming back to, Facing El Chapo looks set to be one of the more talked-about additions to the Irish Netflix catalogue this August, as What's on Netflix reported.
