First footage from IT: Chapter Two terrifies audiences in Las Vegas

it chapter 2

The first scene shown from the movie is described as being “scary as hell”.

To say that 2017’s remake of Stephen King’s IT was a massive success would be a bit of an understatement. Rave reviews and freaked out audiences resulted in $700 million at the box office, making it the biggest horror movie of all time.

That movie ended with the subtitle Chapter One, so we knew there was more of this horror to come.

Now we’re closing in on IT: Chapter Two, and the very first footage was shown to audiences at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday, with director Andy Muschietti taking the stage to introduce the adult versions of the Losers’ Club: James McAvoy (Bill), Jessica Chastain (Beverly), Bill Hader (Richie), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike), Jay Ryan (Ben), James Ransone (Eddie), and Andy Bean (Stanley).

As per Variety, the footage included scenes of the grown-up Losers Club finally reuniting in a Chinese restaurant, glimpses of Pennywise floating over Derry while holding on to his red balloons, the gang heading back down to the sewers to confront the evil clown, and one longer scene that focused on the adult Beverly.

In it, we see she has returned to Derry to visit her father’s home, only for an old woman to answer the door. She invites her in, and they briefly talk. But while Beverly is distracted by a picture of the old woman’s father – who looks eerily like Pennywise without the clown make-up – in the background we can see the old woman has been snatched and replaced by something demonic, and it is making its way towards Beverly…

When director Muschietti visited CinemaCon in 2017 to show off footage from the first chapter, he told audiences then that his goal was to make everyone so scared that they would “shit their pants”.

This week, ahead of screening the footage from the sequel, he said: “I’m going to double down on that statement.”

We don’t have too much longer to wait, as IT: Chapter 2 arrives in Irish cinemas on Friday 6 September.
