Sky Arts is airing on TV tonight (Tuesday, 4 November) the stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic gothic sci-fi novel Frankenstein, which was directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting).
This innovative stage version of the story had its premiere in 2011 and starred Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) in the lead roles.
The plot synopsis from Sky Arts reads: "Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker.
"Met with cruelty wherever he goes, the increasingly desperate and vengeful Creature determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal."
Earning rave reviews upon its premiere, Boyle's stage version of Frankenstein was unique as Cumberbatch and Miller traded roles on different nights, alternating between Dr Victor Frankenstein and his creation.
The version airing on Sky Arts tonight sees Miller as the creature and Cumberbatch as the doctor.
Also part of the production is Naomie Harris (Skyfall), who plays Dr Frankenstein’s betrothed, Elizabeth.
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein was recently adapted as a movie by the Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro.
Starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, Guillermo del Toro's take on the story is currently in select cinemas but will land on Netflix this week on Friday, 7 November.
That's before director Maggie Gyllenhaal's film The Bride! arrives in theatres in March 2026, which is also inspired by Shelley's novel and stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.
As for Danny Boyle's version of Shelley's tale, you can watch it tonight on Sky Arts at 11.30pm.
