Wow.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of Game of Thrones, have signed up to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

The news was confirmed by Lucasfilm on Tuesday, with Benioff and Weiss set to come up with a new set of films that will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss released a joint statement celebrating the news, which read: “In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.

“We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

The final season of Game of Thrones is scheduled for some time in 2019 so it won’t be until after that when the latest Star Wars series arrives, but hopefully, we won’t have to wait until a date far, far away to see what they’ve come up with.
