Gen V, one of Prime Video's biggest shows, has just been cancelled in a shock move.
The series is a spin-off of the streamer's smash-hit The Boys, now in its fifth and final season. Both shows take place in a version of the United States where much of the population possesses superhuman abilities, with these powered individuals treated like celebrities.
However, some of these most beloved superheroes, or "supes" for short, often abuse their powers behind closed doors.
Gen V is mainly set at Godolkin University, an educational institution designed to train young adult supes.
It followed Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair, Sabrina), an ambitious first-year student with a dark past and the ability to manipulate blood.
This was as she and her friends (including Lizze Broadway, Ghosted) investigated the death of one of Godolkin's star pupils and stumbled into a conspiracy with far-reaching consequences.
Gen V also co-starred Asa Germann (Scream 7), Derek Luh (Shining Vale), Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass), London Thor (Lady Bird), Maddie Phillips (Teenage Bounty Hunters), Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus) and the late Chance Perdomo (Sabrina)
Its first season premiered in 2023, with its second batch of episodes landing two years later. Well-liked by critics, the series holds a high 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In JOE's review of Gen V S2, we wrote: "While Gen V season one was already a hit with both audiences and critics, we believe its second batch of episodes is a major step-up.
"S2 delivers huge heaps of the franchise's trademark mix of gory superhero action, shocking humour, and rich celebrity/political satire.
"Yet, it also bolsters the blend by having a more emotional story and a brilliant new villain in the form of Hamish Linklater's hard-to-pin-down dean."
As per multiple outlets, Gen V executive producers Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg issued a statement regarding the cancellation.
It reads: “While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the Gen V characters’ stories in The Boys season five and other VCU [Vought Cinematic Universe] projects on the horizon.
"You’ll see them again," the producers added.
The Boys is midway through its final season right now, while two more spin-off shows, Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico, are on the way.
Vought Rising is set in the 1950s. It will revolve around a "twisted murder mystery" and the origins of Vought, the villainous multi-billion-dollar superhero entertainment conglomerate that is central to the franchise.
The main characters in the prequel will be Soldier Boy and Stormfront, with actors Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash reprising their roles from The Boys.
When Gen V S2 was released, JOE spoke to several of its main cast.
When we asked about what viewers can expect from The Boys' S5, London Thor said: "It is fair to assume that they are throwing everything into this final season.
"It is going to be really intense," with Jaz Sinclair adding: "And crazy and shocking."
Thor then said: "It's going to be wild and very rewarding, I think. It will be enjoyable to watch."
Several Gen V characters are set to appear in The Boys' fifth season, although the extent of their roles in the final episodes is not yet clear.
