Think along the lines of Mamma Mia!, but with Prince songs instead of ABBA songs.

These are not – repeat, NOT! – going to be biopics.

Instead, the folks at Universal have required the rights to a number of classic Prince songs, and are hoping to create an original movie with those songs doubling as the narrative thread.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures have worked with the Prince estate on the idea, having stated that the biopic idea had been mostly covered by 1984 movie Purple Rain.

Which is where working it closer to the Mamma Mia! idea, a movie series that Universal Pictures also owns.

Atom Factory’s Troy Carter, the entertainment advisor of Prince’s estate, will executive produce the Prince movie, which does not have any other cast or crew currently attached.

Similarly, Universal are also set to release Last Christmas, which will feature the music of George Michael.

That project is further along, with director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) directing Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh, and Henry Golding.

Not too much is known about that plot, aside that it is a “holiday romance” set in London and is due for release in November 2019.

So… Love, Actually 2? Sounds good to us!
