Watch this legendary war movie on TV tonight

In a recent list of the best war films ever, the movie ranked 12th place.

The epic is set during the American Civil War. The story follows Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he is offered the command of the United States' first all-African-American regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

"With junior officer Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman)," the plot synopsis adds.

"At first limited to menial manual tasks, the regiment fights to be placed in the heat of battle."

Lauded for its cinematography, its performances, and its spotlighting of an overlooked aspect of the US Civil War, Glory holds a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The movie was nominated for five Oscars and won three, with Denzel Washington taking home the Best Supporting Actor prize.
