GTA movie won’t happen, according to Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser

There’s only a week left until we finally get our hands on the highly anticipated GTA V, but people are already questioning where Rockstar will go from here (we suspect they’re first port of call will be in a hot tub in Vegas).

One rumour that’s been floating around for awhile is that a GTA movie is on the cards, but that’s not the case according to Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser.

Speaking to the Guardian’s Matt Hill, Houser said, “We’ve been offered, many times, and it’s never appealed. The money’s never been close to be worth risking one’s crown jewels. Our small dabblings with Hollywood have always left us running back to games.

“There’s still plenty of kudos in doing a film, but you shouldn’t ever do anything in your life for kudos. It’s much easier to imagine GTA as a TV series, as the form is closer, but I still think we’d be losing too much to ever actually do it.”

So there you have it. The closest we’ll get to a GTA movie is Ron Howard’s directorial debut Grand Theft Auto. In fairness, it’s probably a good thing that Rockstar’s GTA isn’t being made into a movie, considering a lot of previous attempts to feature games on the big screen haven’t gone down too well; Prince of Persia, Mario Bros. and Street Fighter all ring a bell.
