Based on a bestselling 2020 mystery novel by Alice Feeney (Rock Paper Scissors), the show is set in Georgia and follows Anna (Thompson), a former news anchor who quit her job after the loss of a loved one.
Now, eager to get back to work, she seeks to prove her worth to her bosses at the news station by covering a murder in Dahlonega, the sleepy town where she grew up.
Her investigation puts her on a collision course with Jack (Bernthal), her estranged husband, who is also the lead detective on the case.
The pair wind up strangely suspicious of each other when it soon becomes clear that both knew the victim of the killing.
JOE checked out the first episode of the thriller. While we were frustrated throughout the pilot by the overly enigmatic characters and storytelling, as well as its quite lurid tone, the first ep does end on a tantalising reveal that has us curious to see more of the series.
Holding a solid 75% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can check out some positive reviews for His and Hers below.
The Age (Australia): "His and Hers is Prestige Trash – juicy, ludicrous, and not especially airtight. I had a good time with this limited series, but it is righteously unhinged."
Collider: "Despite some pacing issues and at times overcrowded plot points, Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson deliver sharp performances from start to finish in a series that's bound to keep you truly guessing until the very, very end."
The Daily Beast: "Repeatedly, and amusingly, toys with expectations."
The Guardian: "The twists, they are plentiful. The absurdities, they multiply. The viewerly enjoyment, it increases. The script... is serviceable. The endeavour is bingeable. Nobody needs more, this early in the year."
Variety: "A delectable, detailed story spotlighting revenge, women’s rage and deceit, His and Hers seeps into your psyche, shifting everything you thought you knew."
His and Hers is streaming on Netflix now in its entirety.
