A must-watch for fans of Dexter and Hannibal, the film holds a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I Am Not a Serial Killer, the acclaimed mystery horror thriller from 2016, has just been added to Prime Video.

Co-written and directed by Irish filmmaker Billy O’Brien (Isolation), it centres around a teenager in a small Midwestern town in the US named John Wayne Cleaver (Max Records, Where the Wild Things Are) who has been diagnosed as a sociopath and harbours homicidal impulses.

Working at the funeral home his mother (Laura Fraser, Breaking Bad) owns, John controls his urges with strict rules and by speaking to his therapist (Karl Geary, Jimmy’s Hall).

When a series of gruesome murders occur where he lives, however, the teenager’s interest is piqued.

Eventually, John becomes embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the person responsible for the killings, all the while trying to suppress his own murderous urges.

Co-starring Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and based on the hit novel of the same name by Dan Wells, we would advise not reading too much about the movie ahead of watching it due to its twisty plot.

But we will say that its dark storyline – recalling shows like Dexter and Hannibal – as well as its strain of black comedy and its incredibly atmospheric cinematography from Irish Oscar-nominee Robbie Ryan (Poor Things) make the film well worth a watch.

Holding a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, here is a sample of some of the positive reviews I Am Not a Serial Killer received upon release:

Empire: “O’Brien here both successfully reintroduces Max Records to the world, and elicits Christopher Lloyd’s best performance in a long time. His film deserves cult classic status at the very least.”

The Guardian: “A pleasingly macabre study of a mixed-up teen who could be a Dexter-in-waiting.”

Observer (UK): “[Sinks] its storytelling teeth deep enough to draw blood, while still retaining the flesh-wound frivolity of cackling morbid fun.”

Screen International: “A sticky vein of macabre humour is a key selling point for this genre-blurring adaptation of the cult novel by Dan Wells.”

I Am Not a Serial Killer is streaming on Prime Video in Ireland and the UK right now. It is also available to watch on AMC+ and Shudder in the US.
