The Incredibles 2 has absolutely destroyed a huge box office record

Rory Cashin

That is A LOT of money.

14 years ago, the first Incredibles movie was released to a very healthy $70 million opening weekend in the US box office, but the sequel has opened to an incredible $180 million.

That makes it not only the biggest opening weekend for any animated movie (the previous record holder was Finding Dory, which opened to $135 million back in 2016), but it is also the biggest opening weekend for any movie that isn’t certed PG-13.

What that essentially means is that while it didn’t beat the heavy hitters with the Marvel and Star Wars universes, it still managed to get the eighth biggest opening weekend of all time, behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191m in 2015), The Avengers ($207m in 2012), Jurassic World ($208m in 2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220m in 2017), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248m in 2015) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258m in 2018).

The early reviews have also been fantastic, scoring a very healthy 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from the US critics.

We’ll get to see for ourselves just how great it is when The Incredibles 2 is released here on Friday 13 July.
