Irish director Lenny Abrahamson to helm WWI film The Grand Escape

Eoghan Doherty

We already can’t wait…

Following on from his critically-acclaimed work on Room, it looks like Lenny Abrahamson has decided on his next project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Dublin-born director is attached to direct a film adaptation of Neal Bascomb’s upcoming book, The Grand Escape.

And no, before you start humming the theme tune to The Great Escape, this is a different beast altogether.

The Grand Escape, which Bascomb is currently working on, tells the true story of three daredevil World War I pilots being held in Germany’s most infamous POW prison. The story chronicles WWI’s greatest mass prison escape, and the pilots’ subsequent flight to freedom.

Yep, still very, very different from The Great Escape. Don’t you dare hum that theme tune.

Irish production company, Element Pictures, have optioned the book along with Film 4, but no writer to adapt has been announced yet.

You can check out our chat with Lenny Abrahamson about Room by clicking here and our talk about Frank by clicking here. Go on, you know you want to.

Before you ask again, this still has NOTHING to do with The Great Escape.

Earworm time…
