The movie was originally intended to be a part of the Star Wars universe.
If you don't know Fra Fee, two things: (1) you should, and (2) you will.
The Tyrone-born actor is currently co-headlining an extravagant adaptation of Cabaret in London, but he's been on our screens for a decade, having first appeared in the 2012 cinematic version of Les Miserables alongside Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
Since then, he's appeared in Irish productions such as Animals, Pixie and The Boys From County Hell, but last year he grabbed everyone's attention when he appeared as the villainous Kazi in the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
Looking forward, he's got an equally impressive and exciting list of upcoming CV entries, and JOE recently had the opportunity to have a nice long conversation with the Irish actor:
During our chat, in which we also covered everything from the current state of homegrown productions to the importance of queer representation on the screen, we also brought up Rebel Moon, the brand new epic sci-fi movie from director Zack Snyder.
When we asked how that production was going, Fee told us the following:
"I'm really excited about that. I just think Zack is so, so cool. He's such an amazing visionary. He's so passionate about what he does. And I love how this has all come to fruition for him.
"It was initially pitched as Star Wars, in that universe. And when that didn't pan out, and he had subsequently signed a deal with Netflix, then he was like 'Okay, then let me just make this myself'.
"He's got very big plans for it. And he's always had almost a cult following of fans, but after [Zack Snyder's] Justice League, which was just so brilliant, for everyone to see his edit of it, which I think reached an even greater demographic of people. And this now has huge potential.
"And I'm really, really excited. Really excited to start. [...] I had a meeting with the costume designer, and I was like 'Oooh, that's exciting! I can't wait to wear those!'"
Fee will be joined onscreen by an epic cast including Charlie Hunnam, Sofia Boutella, Anthony Hopkins, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher and Corey Stoll.
The production is reportedly set to be two films shot back-to-back, with production to take place until November this year. If we were to guess, we'd reckon the first part of Rebel Moon will arrive on Netflix in late 2023 or early 2024.
