Jon Stewart’s new political comedy Irresistible couldn’t come at a better time

irresistible trailer

We have missed his particular brand of high IQ LOLs.

Even though The Daily Show isn’t the massive beast of a show over here that it is in the States, we reckon enough folk know Jon Stewart from hosting it for a very long time that they are well aware of his impressive mash-up of politics and comedy.

He was also one of the better Oscar hosts of recent years, and for a real deep cut into his career, he played a creepy alien teacher in sci-fi horror The Faculty (remember that one?).

But after a break away from making our brains laugh (by, eh, going on a world tour of comedy with Dave Chappelle), he is now back behind the camera, writing and directing Irresistible.

The movie revolves around a democrat strategist (Steve Carrell) helping a retired veteran (Chris Cooper) run for mayor in a small, conservative midwest town. Also in the mix are Mackenzie Davis, Topher Grace, Debra Messing, Natasha Lyonne and, in what looks set to be a scene-stealing turn, Rose Byrne.

The film is released in American cinemas on Friday 29 May (no Irish release date has been set just yet), but two things need to be considered here:

1) They’re releasing this low-key comedy in the depths of blockbuster season, one week after Fast and Furious 9 and one week before Wonder Woman 1984.

2) Stewart has timed this perfectly in the run-up to the 2020 US Presidential election.

Showing the behind-the-scenes madness of these things and revealing exactly how far some folk will go to ensure an election might just be an eye-opening experience.

Sure, this might feel like preaching to the choir, but maybe the presence of Steve Carrell might go a few more bums-on-seats than a movie like this might have otherwise expected.
