Starring an Oscar winner and legend of the Western genre, the film also inspired a famous gif.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 27 June) is Jeremiah Johnson, the classic '70s Western starring Oscar winner Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).

The Hollywood legend plays the title character, a Mexican-American War veteran who heads to the mountains to live in isolation.

Though woefully unequipped for this, Johnson is fortunate to come across a seasoned mountain man (Will Geer) who is willing to teach him the necessary survival tactics.

As life continues in the mountains, Johnson finds himself a bride (Delle Bolton) and an adopted son (Josh Albee).

That said, their peaceful existence is threatened when Johnson incurs the ire of the Crow tribe.

Based on the experiences of a real-life Old West mountain man of the same name, Jeremiah Johnson was directed by Sydney Pollack (Three Days of the Condor) and was co-written by John Milius (Apocalypse Now).

Praised upon release for its lead turn by Redford, its mountain scenery and gritty story, the movie was a big hit both with audiences and critics.

Now seen as a classic of the Western genre, it even inspired this famous gif below:
