We regret to inform you they are at it again.

While we all revel in the success of Cillian Murphy becoming the first-ever Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor award at the Oscars last night, it’s not all positive news.

Unfortunately, when it comes to Irish people enjoying success on the world stage, there will inevitably be some sort of jab coming our way, whether intentional or not.

While it was enough to deal with Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel making a cringey joke about Irish names, we also had Jonathan Ross having a major slip-up as well.

Ross was hosting the ITV coverage of the ceremony over in the UK and, not one to shy away from controversial comments, was called out for constantly referring to Cillian Murphy as British.

During his duties, Ross referred to Murphy as British multiple times, much to the outrage of everybody watching.

“Who has ever thought Cillian Murphy was British?? LMAO, Jonathan Ross is off his rocker,” said one viewer.

Another said: “Sorry but did Jonathan Ross just talk about British people winning all the awards and then include Cillian Murphy?”

A third added: “Took 3 mins for Jonathan Ross on ITV to claim Cillian’s win as ‘our’ win like he literally got on stage and pointed out he was Irish?”

During his speech for Best Actor, Murphy said that he was a “proud Irish man” and signed off with a “Go raibh maith agat” to the audience.

After the speech, Ross said: “I’m glad Cillian said he was Irish because I have said he’s British in the past so it’s good to remind people,” seemingly not realising that he had spent the evening doing just that.

The British presenter also came under fire for his comments about Friends star Matthew Perry, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 54.

Speaking after the ‘In Memorium’ section of the ceremony, in which Perry was included, Ross said: “Welcome back. A touching tribute from the Academy there of some incredible performers and filmmakers sadly no longer with us. Always a sombre moment.

“It was nice to see Matthew Perry included, even though he’s not primarily known for his work in cinema, they probably could have done it without him.”

Viewers were once again outraged by what was deemed an “unnecessary comment” from the 63-year-old.

One person commented: “Jonathan Ross’ comment on Matthew Perry was so f*****g unnecessary, what the f.”

By the end of the ceremony, it was quite clear that ITV viewers had had enough of Ross, with dozens flocking to Twitter/X to voice their annoyance at the presenter.

“The biggest loser tonight is us Brits who have to listen to Jonathan Ross in the break. All these ITV lot have no idea what they’re talking about,” summed up one viewer.
