Joseph Gordon-Levitt has defended Star Wars: The Last Jedi in a 2,000-word essay

“No one is a perfect hero or a perfect villain, we’re more complicated than that, every one of us.”

In a week that Star Wars: The Last Jedi, one of the world’s highest grossing films right now, has been deemed the most divisive film of the series, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come to defend it by penning a lengthy article for Medium.

The actor is the latest in a range of internet critics who have given their own personal hot-take on the ninth instalment of the franchise, some of which haven’t been all that complimentary.

Gordon-Levitt took to publishing site Medium to voice his opinion on the controversial film, with his 2000-word piece entitled A New Old Skywalker.

The American actor took to Twitter to share his piece: “I finally saw (okay involuntary BB-8 emoji). Then got sucked down a rabbit hole reading people’s starkly differing opinions about it. Couldn’t help it, had to wade in. So I wrote a thing here…”

In the article, he discusses his personal relationship with the film’s director, Luke Skywalker’s background and how that’s shaped him and finally the risks that the film took, featuring which of these he believes has paid off.

“To me, this is a story about not losing faith: faith in the outside world, faith in your allies as well as your enemies, in the future as well as the past, in the next generation that will take your place, and yes, faith in your own damn self.”

The Dark Knight Rises actor’s work has been lauded on Twitter, featuring over 1,000 retweets and almost 4,000 likes at time of writing.
