Kneecap and Ireland snubbed at Oscars as full list of nominees announced

There were a couple of big surprise nominations.

The Irish-language comedy-drama about and starring the Belfast-based hip-hop trio of the same name has been critically acclaimed and has been nominated for and won several major accolades.

It had been shortlisted at the Oscars this year in the Best International Feature and Best Original Song categories but missed out on nominations.

Also snubbed at the Academy Awards this year were the Irish shorts Clodagh and Room Taken which were shortlisted for but did not secure nods in the Best Live Action Short category.

That said, the Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice – which was produced by Irish company Tailored Films – did manage to earn two Oscar nominations.

Sebastian Stan received a nod in the Best Actor category for playing the current US President as a young man, while Jeremy Strong was nominated for playing the controversial attorney Roy Cohn.

As for major surprises, the most noteworthy is the inclusion of American indie drama Nickel Boys and Brazilian drama I'm Still Here in the Best Picture category, in the place of more widely seen A Real Pain.
