The show comes from the writer of recent hits Crá and Fran the Man.
Alex Lawther (Black Mirror) and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Derry Girls) have been cast in a new BBC comedy series that is currently filming in Dublin.
The show is titled Leonard and Hungry Paul and is based on the award-winning, best-selling novel of the same name by Rónán Hession.
Co-starring Laurie Kynaston (Fool Me Once) and described as “feel-good”, the plot synopsis for the comedy reads:
“The story follows two unique board-gaming friends meandering through leafy suburban life, charting a story about Judo, ancient Rome, first loves, and the expansion of the Universe.”
Leonard and Hungry Paul has been adapted for the screen by writers Mark Hodkinson (Fran) and Richie Conroy.
Conroy, who was recently interviewed by JOE, is best known for writing the Irish-language mystery series Crá and the currently in cinemas sports comedy film Fran the Man.
Made by the BBC and RTÉ, Leonard and Hungry Paul will consist of six 30-minute episodes.
In a statement about the programme, Senior Head of Content Commissioning at BBC Northern Ireland, Eddie Doyle, said: “This series promises something special and is full of charm and poignant moments that encapsulate ordinary life.
“With a stellar cast bringing this acclaimed novel to the screen, it will make an exciting addition to BBC Northern Ireland’s offering this year.”
Filming for Leonard and Hungry Paul will continue throughout May in Ireland.
