Lord of the Rings update

It’s a good time to be a Lord of the Rings fan.

A highly anticipated new Lord of the Rings film has been confirmed for release in cinemas later this year.

Titled Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the animated film has been in development for years, but thankfully a release window is set in stone.

The new update, per ComicBook.com, came during the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon 2024 with a release during the Holiday 2024 window being confirmed at the event.

With Peter Jackson’s original trilogy being some of the most successful and beloved movies of all time, there’s been an understandable excitement building towards the release of The War of the Rohirrim.

The news will also come as a relief to fans, who have already experienced delays in its release.

The movie was set for a release in April 2024, however, in August 2023, Warner Bros pushed back the release to December.

Set nearly 200 years before The Two Towers, the prequel film tells the tale of the legendary Helm Hammerhand – the ninth king of Rohan and the last of its first line of Kings – and the origin of the fortress Helm’s Deep.

Much of the voice cast has been confirmed, with Succession’s Brian Cox playing the lead role of Hammerhand.

There is also a return from The Lord of the Rings trilogy star Miranda Otto, who will reprise her role as Éowyn, serving as the narrator of the film.

Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski also feature among the voice cast.

Japanese Anime director Kenji Kamiyama is set to direct the film, with a screenplay by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, based on a story told in the appendices of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien.

It’s an exciting times for Lord of the Rings fans as Prime Video show The Rings of Power is also set to return to our screens later on in 2024, with a concrete release date not yet announced.
