One of Netflix’s best-reviewed original movies is finally available to watch today

It features not one but TWO of Ireland’s best and brightest new acting talents.

Ahead of the 2022 Academy Awards, it looks like Netflix will be represented with quite a few nominations.

They’ve got The Power of the Dog, Don’t Look Up, Passing, Tick Tick Boom and The Mitchells VS The Machines all likely to get shortlisted, and one brand new release is also likely to be ranked alongside them.

The Lost Daughter is the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal – best known for her roles in The Dark Knight and Secretary – and it features an incredible cast, including Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Ed Harris, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, as well as Ireland’s own Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.

The tense psychological drama tells the story of Leda (Colman) who heads off on a solo holiday when her children decide they want to spend more time with her estranged husband. After a few days of relaxation, Leda crosses paths with a brash family, whose presence proves to be somewhat threatening.

To say much more than that would give the game away, but the early festival screenings of the movie had critics lavishing praise at the movie, resulting in a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Lost Daughter is available to watch on Netflix from today (Friday, 31 December).
