Why you should be watching… Love on the Spectrum

Rudi Kinsella

Love on the Spectrum

Love on the Spectrum is like no other dating show, which is very obviously a good thing.

Where can you watch it? Netflix

Number of seasons: One season, four episodes

IMDB rating: 8.7/10

Why you should be watching: It’s unlike any other dating show you’ve seen, which is obviously a good thing.

Before watching the show I was sceptical. I had seen shows like The Undateables that essentially use people’s disabilities for cheap laughs, and I had always hated them. But for some reason I gave Love on the Spectrum a try, and I’m happy I did.

It follows a number of different Australian autistic people who have struggled with romance in their lives, and tries to help them find love.

But instead of the show focusing around the things that hold them back, it looks at what they have to offer. The love, the kindness, the countless amazing qualities to be found in each of the contestants on the show.

Some of them find it more difficult than others, some find it easy, while some are willing to wait it out until the one comes along, but it all makes for exceptional television.

It isn’t exploitative at all, as it seems to actually care about the people involved. When one woman begins to feel anxious on a date, she motions towards the camera, and she leaves. You could imagine a lesser show not allowing its contestants to feel the same comfort.

But within minutes of meeting each character, you care for them, and you want the best for them.

You also get to meet a lot of the people’s families, and all of them are clearly caring, and have gone to great lengths to ensure that their children have had the best lives possible.

While it’s not necessarily a groundbreaking concept, it’s definitely refreshing to see the real part of reality TV for once.

While modern television seems to be entirely consumed with mind-numbing dating shows, that at their best can be entertaining, and at their worst are harmful and dangerous, Love on the Spectrum is refreshing and wholesome watch.

We can only imagine that it won’t be long until a Season 2 is on our screens.
