Lucy Davis: The Office Star Reveals Incurable Cancer Diagnosis

Lucy Davis, known to a generation of Irish viewers as Dawn Tinsley in the BBC’s The Office, has revealed she has been diagnosed with incurable stage four breast cancer, telling fans it is “too late for chemo”. The 53-year-old shared the news in a lengthy post on Instagram on Tuesday.

Davis, the daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, played the sitcom’s receptionist from 2001 to 2003. She said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago and that the cancer has metastasised to her bones — specifically her spine, right hip and ribs. She explained that standing and walking for long periods can be hard, and that she sometimes uses a wheelchair.

Lucy Davis: ‘I’m at peace with it’

“The initial lump that I felt, wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything – get everything checked out.”

Davis said she is “trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can”, adding: “I’m not scared of whatever comes next. I’m at peace with it.” As RTÉ News reports, she also shared a video of herself ringing a bell to mark the end of her treatment.

The actress said she intends to keep working — acting, she wrote, is “one of the biggest joys in my life” — and to continue her animal rights campaigning. You can keep up with the latest Movies & TV news on JOE.
