Michael Fassbender confirmed to star in hit spy show remake from Hanna director

The series’ producers have said the show will ‘follow in the great tradition’ of Homeland.

It has been confirmed that Irish actor Michael Fassbender (The Killer) will star in The Agency, a new spy thriller series executively produced by George Clooney and directed by Joe Wright.

The Agency, formerly titled The Department, is a remake of the French show The Bureau, which ran for five seasons between 2015 and 2020 and was a hit with both audiences and critics.

In fact, some have even called it France’s greatest series ever.

The original show centres on the daily life and missions of agents with the country’s external security service – its equivalent of the CIA.

In particular, it focuses on the ‘Bureau of Legends’, a unit responsible for training and handling deep-cover agents on long-term missions in areas with French interests.

Living under false identities for years, these agents’ missions are to identify and recruit good intelligence sources.

“Intelligence officer Guillaume Debailly is mysteriously recalled to Paris after spending six years under cover in Syria,” The Bureau’s plot synopsis states.

“As he tries to re-connect with his daughter, ex-wife and colleagues, Debailly risks everything by resuming contact with his married lover, Nadia, who might have secrets of her own that jeopardise the agent.”

Paramount+ have confirmed that the remake will follow Martian (played by Fassbender), a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station.

“When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage,” the official plot synopsis for The Agency reads.

While initial reports suggested Clooney would direct part of the US series, Paramount+ has now said that Wright (Atonement, Hanna, The Darkest Hour) will direct and executively produce the spy show.

Clooney will still executively produce The Agency, alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Ford v Ferrari) – who will write all ten episodes.

A previous press release stated that the remake will “follow in the great tradition” of earlier hit spy series Homeland.

Production is currently underway on The Agency in London, which will be released on the Paramount+ streaming service.

It does not have a release date as of yet.
