Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 14 August) is Mothers' Instinct, a psychological thriller movie starring Oscar-winning actresses Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.
Set in early '60s suburban America, the pair play best friends and neighbours Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway) who "both live an idyllic traditional lifestyle with manicured lawns, successful husbands, and sons of the same age".
"Life's perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident," the plot synopsis adds.
"Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond. A psychological battle of wills begins as the maternal instinct reveals its darker side."
Co-starring Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person in the World) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife) as Alice and Celine's husbands, the film marks the directorial debut of accomplished cinematographer Benoît Delhomme (A Most Wanted Man, Lawless).
It is also a remake of the award-winning Belgian movie of the same name.
While the US version of Mothers' Instinct earned mixed reviews from critics for the most part, it has earned praise for its lead performances, its stylish evocation of the '60s time period and its thriller story aimed solely at adults.
Mothers' Instinct airs tonight on BBC One at 12.10am.
