Captain Phillips - Virgin Media One - 9pm

Our pick for this evening, this Oscar Best Picture nominee tells the story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a merchant mariner who was taken hostage by pirates.


The movie boasts incredibly raw performances from both Hanks and Barkhad Abdi, the latter playing the pirates' leader.

This is as director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne franchise) deploys his trademark documentary-like style to help immerse viewers in the terrifying situation unfolding.

Kill Bill: Volume 1 - Turner Classic Movies - 9pm

The first part of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino's excellent martial arts epic, Kill Bill sees a former assassin (Uma Thurman) awake from a four-year coma and wreak vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her.


Psycho - True Movies - 9pm

Alfred Hitchcock's landmark psychological horror-thriller still provokes chills today.

Identity - Horror Channel - 9pm

John Cusack leads the cast of this Agatha Christie-style mystery.


Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Comedy Central - 9pm

In this comedy classic, a high-strung advertising man (Steve Martin) struggles to travel home from New York to Chicago for Thanksgiving, with a goodhearted if annoying salesman (John Candy) as his only companion.

The Girl in the Spider's Web - Film4 - 9pm

Claire Foy steps into the role of hacker Lisbeth Salander in this watchable if average soft-reboot/sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

High Noon - TG4 - 9.10pm


This 1952 western starring Gary Cooper is considered a stand-out entry in the genre.

Billy Crystal stars in this '80s comedy-drama directed by The Fonz himself Henry Winkler.
