Licorice Pizza – BBC Two – 11.20pm
Our pick for tonight is this 2021 comedy-drama from one of the modern great filmmakers Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, The Master, There Will Be Blood).

Set in ’70s Los Angeles, Licorice Pizza revolves around the relationship between a teen actor (Cooper Hoffman, son of Philip Seymour) and a directionless young woman (Alana Haim, member of the popular band Haim) as they cross paths with various figures – including a Hollywood acting legend (Sean Penn), an eccentric movie producer (Bradley Cooper) and a politician in the running to be LA’s mayor (Benny Safdie).

The film’s charming performances from Haim and Hoffman, its scene-stealing turn from Cooper, as well as its beautiful and nostalgic recreation of the period in which its set led the movie to earn three Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture.

Boasting a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, Licorice Pizza is also available to rent on Rakuten TV.
