There’s an absolutely packed line-up of films on TV this evening.

Still recovering from the Christmas celebrations?

If so, you may want to relax on the sofa tonight with a good movie.

Here are the films playing on the telly this Tuesday evening (27 December).

1917 – BBC One – 9pm

The first of our two picks tonight, this action drama follows two young British soldiers (Dean Charles-Chapman and George Mackay) in World War I who must cross through enemy territory to deliver a message to call off a doomed offensive attack.

Helmed by director Sam Mendes (Jarhead, Skyfall) and notable for its stunning use of long takes, 1917 plunges viewers into the chaos of war with thrilling urgency.

It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards upon its release in 2019 and won three, including Best Cinematography.

You can check out JOE’s interview with Mendes about the movie below.

A great Tom Cruise double bill.

In this 2018 thriller, Robert Sheehan plays a parking valet who burglarises the houses of the drivers he services, only to discover one of his rich customers (David Tennant) is a serial killer.

Bad Boys for Life – RTÉ One – 9.25pm

The third and best of the Bad Boys franchise.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World – Sky Arts – 9.25pm

Martin Scorsese’s documentary about “the quiet Beatle”.

The Post – RTÉ2 – 9.40pm

The second of our picks for tonight, this historical political thriller depicts the attempts by The Washington Post’s journalists in 1971 to publish the infamous Pentagon Papers, a set of classified documents regarding the US Government’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

A late-period effort from legendary director Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker’s retelling of the fascinating and important true story benefits from a breakneck pace, an excellent screenplay and a handful of wonderful performances, including by Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Bob Odenkirk and Matthew Rhys.

Upon its release in 2017, The Post was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress for Streep at the Oscars.

The Equalizer – Virgin Media One – 10pm

Denzel Washington stars in this cinematic update of the classic ’80s spy-thriller series.

Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are best friends on the run in this legendary crime comedy-drama from director Ridley Scott.

White House Down – Virgin Media Two – 11pm

Oscar Best Picture nominee The Post is among our picks for this evening

Kiss the Girls – Sky Witness – 11pm

Morgan Freeman is Detective Alex Cross is this solid psychological thriller based on James Patterson’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Drive Angry – Comedy Central – 11pm

Nicolas Cage plays John Milton, a man who escapes from Hell with Satan’s gun, the Godkiller, to kill a cult leader who murdered his daughter and kidnapped her baby.

While you’ll probably start watching this for Cage, you’ll keep watching it for William Fichtner’s incredible performance as Satan’s dry and arrogant assistant assigned to return Milton to hell.

War – Turner Classic Movies – 11pm

A very forgettable Jason Statham/Jet Li starring action thriller.

Last Shift – Horror Xtra – 11pm

A rookie cop’s shift alone on the last night of a closing police station turns into a living nightmare in this indie horror with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Saturn 3 – Legend – 11.10pm

David Oyelowo gives a fun lead performance is this unremarkable but watchable crime comedy.
