One of the best Irish films of recent years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It won Best Irish Film at the Galway Film Fleadh and has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Need something to watch this Friday night? Well, your options include The Late Late Show, one of the best movies of 2023 so far on Disney+ and the 13 films recently added to Netflix (including an acclaimed slasher comedy).

However, for even more options, here are the movies airing on telly this evening.

Sleepy Hollow – Film4 – 9pm

Tim Burton directs this gorgeously atmospheric 18th-century-set slasher starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.

Halloween II – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Speaking of slashers, this is the first sequel to one of the best slashers of all time.

Narrow Margin – Legend – 9pm

A ’90s neo-noir action thriller starring Anne Archer and Gene Hackman.

Mechanic: Resurrection – E4 – 9pm

A watchable if very forgettable Jason Statham action sequel.

Chissum – TG4 – 9.55pm

Friday night is Western night on TG4. This week’s offering is a 1970 John Wayne vehicle.

Redemption of a Rogue – RTÉ2 – 10pm

Our pick for tonight is this Irish movie about a troubled man named Jimmy (Aaron Monaghan) who returns to Cavan to make peace with his dying father. However, just moments after Jimmy arrives, his dad passes away.

As it turns out, the father’s will states that the deceased must not be buried on a wet day or else Jimmy and his brother (Kieran Roche) will be disinherited. Unfortunately for them, it begins to rain endlessly.

The feature-length directorial debut of playwright Philip Doherty, Redemption of a Rogue earned rave reviews upon premiering in 2020 – winning the Best Irish Film award at the Galway Film Fleadh and scoring a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. In particular, critics praised the movie’s blackly comic script, inventive visual gags and the deadpan lead turn from Monaghan.

21 Bridges – Virgin Media One – 10pm

This acclaimed 2021 music documentary follows the life and career of musician Tina Turner. You can check out JOE’s interview with its directors right here.

Guardians of the Galaxy – BBC One – 10.40pm

Ingrid Goes West – MTV – 11pm

Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen are excellent in this darkly comedic social media satire.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Film4 – 11.10pm

Godfather Trilogy director Francis Ford Coppola’s hugely entertaining take on the classic vampire novel.

Postcards from the Edge – RTÉ One – 11.40pm
