Redemption of a Rogue – RTÉ2 – 10pm
Our pick for tonight is this Irish movie about a troubled man named Jimmy (Aaron Monaghan) who returns to Cavan to make peace with his dying father. However, just moments after Jimmy arrives, his dad passes away.
As it turns out, the father’s will states that the deceased must not be buried on a wet day or else Jimmy and his brother (Kieran Roche) will be disinherited. Unfortunately for them, it begins to rain endlessly.
The feature-length directorial debut of playwright Philip Doherty, Redemption of a Rogue earned rave reviews upon premiering in 2020 – winning the Best Irish Film award at the Galway Film Fleadh and scoring a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. In particular, critics praised the movie’s blackly comic script, inventive visual gags and the deadpan lead turn from Monaghan.
