american gigolo

Even if you’ve never heard of this movie, you have heard its theme song.

Need a movie for tonight? Well, we’ve got you covered with this list of films on TV this evening.

The Matrix – Sky Showcase – 9pm
“You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”

Land – Film4 – 9pm
Robin Wright directs and stars in this psychological drama as a woman who purchases a remote cabin and resolves to live in solitude without any modern conveniences.

Red Rock West – Legend – 9pm
One of Nicolas Cage’s best rated films which we recommended recently.

The Wolf of Wall Street – TG4 – 9.30pm
Leonardo DiCaprio delivers one of his greatest performances in this brilliant black comedy crime drama from filmmaker Martin Scorsese that is based on true events.

The Terminator – ITV4 – 9.55pm
The first one where Arnie is evil.

Air Force One – Film4 – 10.45pm
In this very fun action thriller, terrorists (led by Gary Oldman) hijack Air Force One with the US President (Harrison Ford) and his family on board.

However, the President – who is a Vietnam veteran – decides to fight back and try to rescue the hostages.

Cell – LegendXtra – 10.50pm
A not very good adaptation of a Stephen King zombie novel starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Prince of Darkness – Legend – 10.55pm
One of legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter’s most underrated movies, Prince of Darkness follows a group of scientists in LA who are asked to assist a Catholic priest (Donald Pleasence) in investigating an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery.

They soon come to learn that the mysterious substance is in fact the essence of Satan.

Richard GereRichard Gere in American Gigolo, our movies on TV pick for tonight

An Irish Goodbye – RTÉ One – 11.35pm
The Irish short film that won an Oscar last year.

American Gigolo – Film4 – 1.10am
Our pick for tonight is this 1980 crime thriller about a high-priced escort in Los Angeles (Richard Gere) who becomes romantically involved with a prominent politician’s wife (Lauren Hutton), while also becoming the prime suspect in a murder case.

Written and directed by Paul Schrader (perhaps best known for penning the screenplay for Taxi Driver), American Gigolo was a hit with both audiences and critics thanks to its commanding lead turn from Gere, its stylish visuals and its twisty plot.

The movie is also noteworthy for its Giorgio Moroder-composed soundtrack – with its main theme being the hit Blondie single ‘Call Me’ – as well as for making the Giorgio Armani brand of clothes popular in Hollywood due to them featuring prominently in Gere’s character’s wardrobe.

As well as airing on TV tonight, American Gigolo is also available to stream on Paramount+. You can check out the trailer for the film right here:
